Staycation Weekend

In my last blog post I said we always have to get away if we have time, but we ignored this advice this last weekend. Two reasons: places are expensive and we had less than 48 hours. We still ended up getting out of the county, doing lots of activities and having a great time!

Friday Corban had to work until 5 so we went downtown Olympia and enjoyed a nice slow dinner at Cascadia which was delicious and they have a full vegan/vegetarian meal. This is the one place in down that feels like you can stay all night and it’s got a great vibe. Then we went to REI to try to get our America the Beautiful pass and look at the garage sale. Came back and watched Hit Man which was very fun.

Saturday we woke up and watched our son’s basketball game and then came home for some food and to pack up the bikes. We headed to Gig Harbor, took the scenic route and rode bikes at the 360 trails. It is an amazing park with a huge playground, field, covered picnic tables and then tons of trails, jump lines, pump track and trail, and walking trails as well.

Picked up our favorite vegan meal from Wayside for dinner which we ate in the car down at the water. We watched a beautiful sunset, saw a heron in a tree and Corban took some more photos and then headed home to watch the Seahawks game. Then played Wingspan but Corban was so tired he could hardly play, even though he ended up beating me.

Sunday was half productive half adventure. Started by doing all the mental load stuff: meal planning for the week, catching up on the budget, looking at the calendar for this coming week, booking places to stay for spring break, planning out summer trips, and committing to working some weddings. Then we went to the Margaret Mckinney Campground and hiked from there to Mima Falls and back which was 6.5 miles and 1000ft elevation gain. It was a beautiful sunny day even though it was cold and we walked by rivers, saw Rainier popping off, and Corban got some amazing pictures.

This is one of my favorite pictures from the weekend. The light coming through the trees on this hillside, the definition, and how tiny I look right in the middle.

Though we had hoped to get away again this weekend, the financially responsible part of us knew we should save our money for other longer trips this year and we had no regrets! It’s such a good reminder that you can get out of town, do relatively inexpensive activities, and still have a very memorable weekend!
