11th Anniversary at Cannon Beach
Corban and I took a last minute trip to Cannon Beach for our 11th anniversary!
We were planning on having a staycation to be “responsible” and then realized we had a travel credit with our Capital One Venture card (referral link) and booked a room at the Surfsand Resort 2 days prior! We brought books and games and figured we’d get the ocean front unit so we could at least see the ocean since it’d be so gross outside.
And then SHOCKER, in classic Pacific Northwest style, it was sunny and 60 degrees the entire day on Saturday so we played one game the entire weekend, read zero pages of our books, and walked everywhere and it was absolutely lovely!
We arrived at 2:30 pm on Friday to Surfsand and were greeted with a free drink(seltzer for me and beer for Corban) and then told them it was our anniversary and got to pick a bottle of wine as a gift from the hotel! The fog was so dense the entire day on Friday in Cannon Beach that we couldn't see 50 ft in front of us much less Haystack Rock. The entire drive down until we turned the corner in Astoria was beautiful and blue sky though so it was quite the dramatic change. We went for a dark and foggy walk on the beach after checking out our amazing hotel room and then walked to Pelican Brewing Company for dinner. Came back and got our free cookie from the hotel(I regretted later) used the hot tub, which was not very hot, played a single game of Farkle, and then went to bed. That non vegan cookie that I enjoyed so much earlier with my free blueberry seltzer from the hotel woke me up incredibly nauseous at 12am. Thankfully I was able to sleep it off but it was rough!
Saturday we woke up to amazing blue skies and sunshine, SO thankful that the fog left. We walked to Sleepy Monk for coffee and then to breakfast at the Oasis Cafe in the downtown area. We took the beach walk back to the hotel and it was such a still and gorgeous morning. Lots of birds, Corban took tons of cool pictures and we enjoyed our slow, meandering walk very much.
We drove to Seasons Cafe for more coffee and some lunch and it was delicious and had a vegan option but it took forever. Vegan in Cannon Beach in the off season is NOT easy! We decided to go hike at Ecola state Park since it was such a beautiful day and ended up spending 2.5 hours walking over 4 miles in the park. The incredible views mixed in with lots of muddy walking in the forest was exactly what our souls needed.
Headed back to the hotel and the sunset was STUNNING and just kept getting better. We got our free cookies and ice cream from the resort and walked down to the beach for a better view. Then went to our room and stood on our balcony to enjoy the sunset that was still jaw droopingly beautiful. Walked to Public Coast Brewing for dinner which was counter order, super chill and delicious and then walked back in the dark on the beach which was a unique first!
Sunday we woke up and got our coffee and breakfast from Sleepy Monk, walked on the beach in 30 mph wind gusts and a little rain which was a stark difference from the day before. We stopped for more coffee and food at Starbucks on the way back which they messed up my order and I had my first bite of meat in over 4 years because they gave me the wrong wrap. Ugh!
We decided on this trip that anytime we have the opportunity to go somewhere, we HAVE to go. It’s so good to get out of the house and out of the city to slow down, be intentional, make new memories, and explore a new places. We are so grateful to Corban’s parents for taking the kids for the weekend. Time as just a couple when you’re parents is so hard to come by and we try to cherish every minute of it when we get it. And WOW, what 48 hours does without being constantly peppered with requests, questions, bedtimes, interruptions, and getting up during meals does for a relationship and for our brains!
