Vegan Guide to Maui
When we picked Maui for our 10th anniversary trip, part of the consideration for me was easy access to vegan food. I didn’t want to cook any meals other than avocado toast for breakfast on this trip! Since becoming vegan, you can read about that here, this is top of mind for me every time we travel. Maui has it all and we ate from so many amazing places that had fantastic vegan food! I can’t wait to go back and eat again at some of our favorites! My husband (Corban) is pescatarian so he enjoyed fresh fish at some of these places but eats vegan with me most of the time!
Right off the top our two favorite vegan places were A’A Roots and Ahonui. Unfortunately we only got to eat at Ahonui once but they will be the first we return to when we get back to Maui. It helps that they are 3 mins from the airport! ha!
Acai bowls are one of Corban’s all-time favorite treats, so naturally, he made it his mission to try as many as possible during our time in Maui. While I’m not the biggest fan of the texture, I happily tagged along because I love a good smoothie. Multiple mornings we walked and got smoothies and Acai Choice Health Bar.
The most amazing experience was Moku Roots Farm Dinner. They used to have a restaurant in Lahaina and then after the fire the moved "upcountry”. They are apparently opening a new place soon and we will make sure visit it when we return to Maui. Everything was homemade, there was so much food from appetizers, to the main course to dessert and fresh juice, and it was an amazing sunset view.
On our first morning in Maui, we strolled out of the resort, past the pools, and stumbled upon a pop-up market filled with local vendors. One tent immediately caught our eye—an incredible Israeli food stand run by a private chef based right on the island. We started our day with a homemade cinnamon roll (still dreaming about it!) and it was so good, we made sure to come back for lunch. Totally worth it.
We had amazing vegan ice cream in Paia two different times at Ice Cream Paia. The fresh flavors were incredible and they had a bunch of vegan options for me! The fresh berry vegan ice cream and the chocolate together were a dream and I can’t wait to go back!
Earth Aloha Eats - Think classic American comfort food—just veganized. It was definitely on the greasier side, but totally hit the spot. The vegan mozzarella sticks were a personal highlight since being vegan those are hard to come by!
Hula Grill Kaanapali - Our final night in Maui we enjoyed a great meal at the Hula Grill. With our toes in the sand, sitting on the beach with live music, and the best food Corban’s ever eaten. My food was fine, sometimes these chains struggle with making vegan taste good!
A’A Roots - We found this place in a strip mall 5 mins up the road from our resort. The entire restaurant is vegan and we had an amazing lunch there one day and came back for breakfast the next day. I couldn’t get enough! So fresh and so filling and tasted just like what we eat at home but elevated!
DA Best Pho & Vietnamese Foods - We ate at this food truck one night when we didnt’ feel like sitting in a restaurant and it was on the later side. There’s a whole food truck complex as you leave the back entrance of Honua Kai Resort and we strolled through and found this place. I had a delicious tofu and rice bowl and Corban had a Ban Mi sandwich. Lots of food for the price, quick to make it and it was a fun vibe!
Duke’s restaurant and bar - So this place is in the pool area at the Honua Kai Resort where we stayed so obviously it was super convenient. We are ate here twice, once at the bar which has a different menu - more casual, and the other at the restaurant which is more formal. Both were delicious, the drinks were fantastic, and the location was amazing!
Flatbread Company - Paia, the most amazing vegan pizza I’ve ever had. This place has me still thinking about it and returning when I get back to Maui. This was our lunch before we saw sunset at Haleakala and then the leftovers were our dinner on our drive home.
We walked further down the strip mall and found Surfing monkey after Corban ate at Coconut’s Fish house and I had Earth Aloha Eats in Kihei. We liked the other shaved ice place better but this was still good, just smaller portions and more expensive!
Sweet Hula - Delicious smoothie and the best açaí bowl in Kihei in a food truck lot.
Shave Ice in Paradise - This place was in the strip mall across the street from our condo so it was super convenient. Corban had ice cream on the bottom and cream on the top and I just had regular shaved ice. It was HUGE portions and super cheap.
Miss Arepa - This is a great fully Vegan restaurant in a strip mall across the street from our resort. We grabbed this food one night as takeout and went back to our condo and ate on our balcony!
Aloha Thai Fusion - The spiciest Thai we have ever had. Asked for a 3/10 thinking since it’s usually out of 5 that a 3 would be safe and it. It was the spiciest thing we’ve ever eaten and we made it through about 1/3 of each of our meals and then had to stop and get something else for dinner.
Maui Brewing Co - On our night in after the super spicy Thai, we stopped at Maui Brewing for dinner take 2. The vegan burger was super herby and weird tasting, the food was subpar overall but the location was cool.
Ahonui - amazing focaccia sandwich in one of the food truck lots right next to the airport. Can’t wait to go back and get another one and try other food! It will be our first stop off the airplane next time we go!
Wanted to try but couldn’t:
Tabay’s Mindful Kitchen was closed the entire time we were in Maui which is such a bummer because it was the first food truck I had found in Maui when I started looking at vegan food!
