Sail Trilogy

The Sail Trilogy trip to Lana’i was by far the most unique part of our anniversary trip and the one we think about most often now looking back. It was the most luxurious thing we’ve ever booked and it was totally worth every penny. I would highly recommend this for all adults and especially for couples.

We booked the morning sail and we decided to walk instead of dealing with parking. We left the resort around 6 am and enjoyed a beautiful sunrise walk on the beach to Outrigger Ka’anapali a bit over a mile away. Funny enough this Outrigger is where we originally booked this trip at and then we switched to Honua Kai and it was the right choice. Thankfully there is a paved/boardwalk path the whole way there from Honua Kai Resort where we stayed and it became a frequently used path for us! We heard the safety talk and then loaded up on the massive sail boat. Boarding the boat is the reason they don’t recommend kids come on this trip, you have to board between waves and run up and grab on to the handles, quite a fun way to start!

We had breakfast, a special vegan mango muffin for me, and coffee as we rode across the water to Lana’i. Another fun note is that we got really lucky and our group was only about 25 people and the boat fit over 80 so there was tons of extra breathing room. The morning was very dramatic as you can see from the rainbow and sunshine pictures above and the clouds and sunlight on the opposite side the Lana’i.

We got off the boat onto a big dock and then walked for a few minutes up the road and onto the private beach of Hulope Bay. We grabbed the provided snorkel gear which was much better than the borrowed stuff we’d been using that was 10+ years old from Costco, and then snorkeled in the most amazing water. Hulopoe Bay, the name of this spot, was Corban’s favorite spot to snorkel because the water was perfectly flat! It is also a spot where only Sail Trilogy and the locals have access to so it was just our group there! Tons of colorful fish, crazy blue and teal water, and so much coral!

Then we went for a little optional walk up to Puupehe next to the Puu Pehe Cove to see the view from the top. We got to hear the legend of the area and see cliff markings. The view from the top with the red rock and the teal water was incredible!

Below are some photos Corban took looking down on the beach of Puu Pehe Cove and then in the jungle path to get up to lunch.

Then we walked to a covered shelter near the docks and had a catered lunch. There was a vegan option for me which was amazing and we ate family style around 2 massive picnic tables. Having vegan food prepared for me outside of my husband or I doing it is such a rarity and feels so special! We hung out in the grass for a bit after eating until it was time to board the boat.

The bar was open on the way back and even though it was super windy and rough I didn’t get motion sick thank goodness! We had a couple drinks, a lot of laughs watching the crew walk around the boat with the waves and then the magic started to happen! We spotted the first whale of the season which was so exciting since it was pretty early for whales! Then the luck continued and we saw a pod of dolphins. We learned that seeing a few at the top meant there were hundreds down below sleeping! Such a special experience to see both of these amazing creatures and then the crew put up the sail and sailed us in the rest of the way.

We then got off the boat and made the trek back down the beach path to our hotel. At this point we were wishing we had driven but honestly I think the beach walk to try to start processing this crazy amazing experience was just what we needed. This is an experience I’d highly recommend doing if you can afford it. We loved every second of this day and it was the biggest single highlight from this trip for both of us.

On these trips there are professional photographers who take pictures of each group in various different points on the trip including snorkeling. We paid for the professional pictures(below) to have a sweet keepsake and it was totally worth it! As parents we don’t have as many non-selfie photos of us as I’d like so we figured why not!
